Auditions to join Mariachi Herencia de Mexico are now open.
You must audition with the instrument designated on your application. Please bring your own instrument to the audition. If you do not have an instrument of your own, one will be provided for you. If you are auditioning for trumpet and using a loaned instrument, you must bring your own mouthpiece.
All auditions will consist of musical scales (for violin and trumpet), chord progressions (for guitar and vihuela), a solo piece and a sight-reading exercise as noted below:
SCALES (Violin, Guitarron and Trumpet). You must be prepared to play at least one of the four major scales (including the keys of C, G, D and A) up to three octaves. You should also prepare to play a chromatic scale starting with C, G, D and/or A. Trumpet students may also be asked to play a major scale in the key of F. Depending on your skillset and training experience, the panel may require you to play additional major scales.
CHORDS (for Guitar and Vihuela). You must be prepared to play chords, chord progressions and demonstrate strumming rhythmic patterns.
SOLO. You must prepare a solo piece, which showcases your skills on your instrument. This can be a piece from any musical genre that is meant to be a solo or it can be a part within a song that you can play alone. You should try to play by rote memory and bring sheet music for the auditors to follow along.
SIGHT‐READING. You will be given a short (16 measures or less) selection to perform. Time will be allowed to look over the material. Skill level expectations will increase depending on your training experience.
INTERVIEW. Be ready to talk briefly about your musical interests, other activities and why you want to play mariachi music.
RECOMMENDATION FORM. Students must complete a Teacher Recommendation Form and have it filled out by a current music teacher. Students MUST bring the completed form to the audition. If students do not provide the Recommendation Form, they will be disqualified from the audition process.
